CURRENT EXHIBITION
ESKE KATH: NEIGHBORS | JANUARY 12 - FEBRUARY 9, 2016

Dillon Gallery is pleased to present "Neighbors," Eske Kath's first solo exhibition with the gallery.

Continuing Kath's overarching theme, the paintings use the image of the house as a symbolic stand-in for human beings. The houses can be built up, torn apart, and then reconstructed in new constellations. In an attempt to create meaning, they make constructions with other houses to create a sense of belonging. But ultimately the house is alone.

In these new paintings each house appears weightless and solitary. Floating freely in a vast empty or star spangled space with no apparent direction, while in fact, they are carefully placed using classic compositional techniques like the Golden Section, rule of thirds, and so forth. Complimentary colors push the houses apart, but everything is held together by “gravity.”

One can still see remnants of the chalk grid used to keep the houses in check. But the absence of the lines creates the illusion that the houses are detached from the rules and laws of the lines. Like in our everyday life, we are guided by rules that are not readily visible. Natural and social laws however keep us in an invisible grip.

Eske Kath graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen in 2003. In 2009 he was commissioned to paint a chamber ceiling in the Crown Prince of Denmark’s Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen. He lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
